In the middle ages, you would never leave the house without a bag! The technology for pants with pockets was still a few hundred years away, so without a bag of any kind, you wouldn’t have any place to store your coins or the day-to-day items you would usually take on your travels.
More important than any other type of bag was the belt pouch. Designed to be looped through a belt and worn on the hip, these purses were an incredibly important part of life as well as a huge piece of fashion. The middle ages were truly the time of the belt pouch, and anyone with any sense wouldn’t be caught without one.
This belt pouch is made to the same style as those commonly found in XIV-XV century. It is referred to as a “kidney pouch”. The bag consists of one main flap on the front, which can be lifted up to reveal an inner pocket and three little pouchlets with drawstrings. These little pouchlets allow you to store a variety of different items, such as your keys, coins, dice, ear spoon… whatever you feel like you might need to keep with you on a daily basis. The main pocket of the bag is big enough for a phone and small wallet, so you can keep your essential mundane items hidden and safe inside the pouch.
The embossing on this bag is stunning! You can see a few different animals: a goat and bids, as well as acorns and other foliage. It creates a beautiful, captivating scene that no doubt people will want to admire. Though not lifted directly from a historical source, it is meant to evoke imagery of medieval manuscripts and art from the XIV century. This pouch matches our ‘Timeless Middle Ages” belt perfectly, with the embossing at the top mimicking the embossing of the belt, creating a very cohesive combination that is very fashionable.
